This Sunday marks the start of many weekend pilgrimages to Parc Jean-Drapeau, as Montrealers and visitors alike spoil themselves with local and international electronic music talents at Piknic Electronik. From local favorites Misstress Barbara and Paolo Rocco, to globetrotters like Claptone and Bicep, I’ve outlined five artists to look out for during this summer’s stacked Piknic lineup, along with some of their best mixes to glow up your pregame.
Brazil’s very own ANNA has been sweeping the globe with vibrant, diverse, hard hitting sets played at some of the world’s biggest electronic music festivals. Check out ANNA’s set playing the 15th anniversary show of Brazil’s infamous Warung Beach Club, captured and streamed by BE-AT.TV. This set perfectly characterizes her energy and sound. For all of you tech house fans, enjoy one of ANNA’s tech-house sets featured by Mixmag. If you’re prepared to get swept off your feet by some serious fem, high energy techno, catch ANNA this Sunday for Piknic’s opening show!
Montrealers were graced with a visit from Traumer to (((the temple))) back in February alongside Akufen, and now he’s back to provide all the right grooves at Piknic on June 17th. Techno and minimal house fans alike are certainly in for a treat. A little while back, I was totally enveloped in Traumer’s mixes featured by BBC Radio 1. Here’s my favorite one out of the four featured in Future 12 – “A Dance At Night”. If you’re looking for something more recent, get lost in Traumer’s January set from Lizdas club in Lithuania.
Belgian techno beauty Amelie Lens has taken the scene by storm, bringing with her all some seriously intense, rhythmic, bass driven beats. If you’re looking for not only a musically riveting experience, but a physically riveting experience, look no further than her visit to Piknic on June 10th. Her 7.5 hour set at Labyrinth Club in Hasselt is certainly one for the books, and most definitely worth a listen. If you have a few extra minutes to spare, her viral vinyl-only home session livestream from 2017 is easy on the ears, and demonstrates her chops as a killer DJ.
Just this last December, I had the pleasure of seeing Danny Daze spin at The Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Although the dancefloor was tiny and the show ended quite early, what I witnessed was engaging, unique, and masterful control of the decks. If you’re ready to put on your dancing shoes and catch the last of the summer’s rays, Miami legend Danny Daze’s show at Piknic on September 9th is an absolute must see. Here are a couple of my favorite mixes of his: Live @ Griessmuhle Berlin, and his July 2016 set at London’s infamous Fabric night club. Enjoy!
CHARLOTTE DE WITTE
Although she’s considered by many as the newer girl on the scene, Charlotte de Witte packs a punch with her riveting, extremely percussive, and high BPM sets. At just 25, Charlotte has risen to international fame as both a DJ and producer. Looking to hear something serious, melancholy, and dark? Here are two of my favorite Charlotte de Witte sets: one from BeMassive Records’ 2017 Label night, and more recently, episode #13 from her podcast on Studio Brussel’s soundcloud.
Stay tuned for more artist and mix shout-outs as we groove through what looks like the best Piknic lineup we’ve seen to date! You can purchase tickets to Piknic Electronik events HERE!
